From May 4 to May 8, the Deutsche Schule Jakarta once again dedicated an entire week to sustainability, future careers, environmental awareness, and creative problem-solving during its annual Green Week 2026.

Over the years, Green Week has become an important tradition at DSJ – a week in which students of all age groups explore how responsibility, creativity, and innovation can help shape a better future. This year’s theme, “Jobs That Improve Our World,” invited students to discover professions, ideas, and technologies that contribute to a more sustainable society.

The week began with three age-specific opening events in the Aula, featuring guest speakers and partner organizations connected to sustainability, science, agriculture, and environmental innovation. Students learned more about real-world challenges and future-oriented careers, while discovering how different industries are already working toward more sustainable solutions.

One important topic throughout the week was waste reduction and responsible consumption. Students explored the environmental impact of the fashion industry, including the enormous amount of water (over 2500 liters) needed to produce a single cotton T-shirt. A visiting Tukang Jahit demonstrated Klass 1/2 how clothing can be repaired, reused, and creatively transformed instead of thrown away. Other projects focused on fashion and jewelry made from recycled plastic and plastic bottles.

Many activities during the week were hands-on. Students visited organic farms and zoos, explored urban farming concepts, and learned more about spices, vegetables, and organic food production together with Five Eyes Farming. Grade 5 students even planted and cared for their own vegetables and fruits.

Environmental science and future technologies also played an important role. Students explored the potential of microalgae, learned how soldier flies can transform organic waste into protein-rich animal feed, and discovered new approaches to sustainability in agriculture and industry.

Water conservation became another focus. Primary 4 students built their own water filter systems and visited a local water treatment facility to better understand how clean water is processed and protected.

Biodiversity and wildlife conservation were explored across different grade levels. Kindergarten and Grade 6 students learned about bees and the work of beekeepers through workshops and visits to a bee farm. Primary 2 focused on elephants and wildlife conservation, including a visit to Ragunan Zoo and an art project creating colorful elephants from old plastic bottles.

In fact, creative and artistic elements could be seen throughout many of the projects during the week. Students created paintings using coffee grounds, designed bags and pouches from old billboards together with StuffoLabs, and built sculptures and robots from plastic waste while discussing the future challenges of plastic pollution.

Older students explored sustainable urban development by designing their own city concepts and 3D models focused on greener and more livable urban spaces.

DSJ’s football academy partner Borussia Mönchengladbach also contributed by presenting the club’s renewable energy and sustainability initiatives.

Green Week 2026 once again showed how learning at DSJ extends far beyond the classroom. A big thank you goes to all teachers, students, parents, guest speakers, and partners whose enthusiasm and commitment helped make this year’s Green Week another inspiring experience for the entire school community.

We are already looking forward to next year’s Green Week and the many new ideas it will bring.
