School of Encounter

School of Encounter

The German School Jakarta is a School of Encounter, a so called Begegnungsschule. We foster intercultural exchange between students, teachers, and parents. Multicultural learning empowers our students to appreciate different cultural heritage and values, and to acquire the cultural competence to live life with an open mind and heart. We provide a friendly, safe, and tolerant environment, promoting respect and empathy for everyone regardless of background, values, ideas, traditions, gender, unique character, or belief.

With us, children and people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds not only learn together but
grow together and understand early on in life, that heterogeneity is a gift. Because we live open-mindedness and collaboration, we make a contribution to international understanding and
prepare our students for a globalised world. Hence we also promote awareness of study and work opportunities around the world.

Education Made in Germany

Education Made in Germany

German schools are known worldwide for their high academic standards and excellent educational support. One of the trademarks is its internationally recognized high-school diploma, the Abitur. German authorities ensure consistently high quality standards, while experienced teachers and managers from Germany ensure compliance and empathy. This makes education Made in Germany so appealing and unique.

Educational science has a long tradition in Germany. In the beginning of the 19th century, the philosopher and reformer Wilhelm von Humboldt recognized that human education is much more than just imparting knowledge, it also has to contain a certain cultivation of a free mind and character that nobody can afford to miss. Around 150 years later, the educational scientist Wolfgang Klafki formulated that young people, with the support of teachers, have to actively acquire knowledge and that motivations, insights, and skills develop gradually.

Since then, learning in Germany has been understood as a process in which the learner can only acquire the cultural heritage of humanity through his or her own doing and real learning experiences. Learning takes place actively and holistically with head, heart and all the senses. And only participatory pedagogy makes it possible to strengthen and develop the personality of each individual student. Hence we feel committed to live up to this educational ideal.

European Values

European Values

The German School Jakarta and its community live by the values set out in Article 2 of the European Constitution (The Lisbon Treaty). The values on which the Union is founded are respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values are common to all Member States in a society characterized by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men. Building on this, the European Union aims to promote peace and the well-being of all people.

All members of the school community, students, parents and teachers, are linked to one another in democratic structures and elect their representatives to the students’ council, the parents' council and the teachers' council. They meet regularly with the school management to discuss their issues in the overall context of the school. By this means especially our students learn very early on to represent their interests in a democratic way and to achieve common goals. Our steering group, the most important body for school development, is made up of parents and teachers and the students are also appropriately involved in school development projects.
