On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Deutsche Schule Jakarta came alive with celebration as the school marked Hari Palawan — Indonesian National Heroes Day.

A group of children are playing with sticks on a wooden table.

The day began with a powerful flag ceremony that unified the entire school community. Students from grades 1 to 12, dressed in traditional white shirts and black trousers, assembled on the sports field. Teachers and staff joined the gathering, supported by the school orchestra performing the Indonesian national anthem. Vice Principal Iris Weuster led the proceedings, solemnly reading the Pancasila, the five guiding principles of Indonesia:

1. Belief in One Supreme God

2. Just and Civilized Humanity

3. The Indonesian Union

4. Democracy Led by Wisdom in Deliberation/Representation

5. Social Justice for All Indonesian People

The spirited ceremony set a reflective and celebratory tone for the day.

The theme of the day, “Wayang,” was explored through a collaborative effort with the Indonesian Heritage Society and the Museum Wayang. This partnership brought a rich cultural experience to life, focusing on the traditional Javanese art of shadow puppetry. Students from grades 1 to 6 participated in engaging workshops where they crafted their own Wayang puppets, showcasing their creativity in various shapes and forms. The excitement carried on into the auditorium, where these handmade puppets starred in short plays performed by the students themselves, bringing this storied art form to life.

The festivities concluded with a heartwarming potluck, generously contributed by parents. This communal meal provided the perfect ending to a day steeped in cultural appreciation, with students gaining a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s rich heritage and traditions.

Through this celebration, DSJ reinforced the importance of honoring national heroes while immersing students in a vital piece of Indonesian culture, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a stronger connection to their roots.
