Who knows the Ondel-Ondel dance?

A group of people wearing masks are standing in a room with their arms outstretched.

On April 5th and 12th the 10th class of the DSJ was visited by Ibu Sherly, Ibu Anila and Ibu Marfuah from SMAN9. The three teachers taught the twelve students the Indonesian dance “Ondel-Ondel”. Since Indonesian dance is a couple dance, the girls and boys were divided into two groups. Ibu Sherly taught the girls the steps and Ibu Anila helped the boys master their steps.

The whole dance was divided into three parts to make it easier to memorize. After each part there was dancing to the music. There was a part where the girls had to walk in a circle, first left foot, then right, and the step size should always be in quarter circles. When the girls did that, the boys had to run around the girls, which was funny because no girl was ever perfectly in sync with her partner.

There will be another dance class where we will put all the pieces together and work to make the dance look as good as possible. Although we don't look like professionals, it's nice to have fun with the nice teachers and classmates every now and then!
